In the late 90’s a group of like-minded people decided to take a gamble and open an artist-run-space in one of the Melbourne’s notorious inner suburbs. Little would they realise that their humble Fitzroy gallery would become one of Melbourne’s longest running artist-run-spaces. I believe that part of the success of 69 Smith Street Gallery has been due to the dedication of a few of the original members who to this day are still playing an active part in the running of the gallery. As National Volunteer week begins (13-19 May) I find myself reflecting on my experiences of volunteering at Smith Street.
- People matters. An artist run space attracts people of all sizes, ages, and interests. I have met some wonderful talented people who have shown and taught me respect, patience and tolerance.
- Opportunity knocks. There is always something that needs doing, which translates to opportunities for sharing and learning new skills.
- Glass half full. By working together challenges soon become opportunities.
- With all its ups and downs the most important thing to remember is to HAVE FUN.
69 Smith Street Gallery will be celebrating 15 years of operations with a limited edition book of works by past and current members and a special end of year exhibition.
